Kinda messy but altogether OK considering that thus far my gardening experience stops at watering potted plants.

Mulching is worse, that stuff is way harder than grease to get out from under your nails.

There is nothing messier. Over the weekend, my daughter and I ripped out all the old plants from our raised bed, put in new soil, and started planting new shrubs. This involved me climbing into the dirt and rolling around with a spade in my hands hacking and digging up root balls. Much soap and water were consumed during cleanup.

Gotta put a nice layer of woodchips on top of that. My dad made me dig out a small tree that popped up somewhere we don’t a tree this weekend but I wanted to save it so I started putting it in a pot and my dad and our handyman was like, put it into the koi pond so its roots can get more water.
My 4 foot tall jujube tree has been hanging out in my koi pond for the last 3 days like a person sitting in a hot tub. If it survives, I’m going to be amazed.

Before the mulch a good trick is to put a few layers of newspaper down. It delays some of the smaller weeeds and unlike that berlap crap that some use, you can easily dig it up a few years down the line, as it will naturaly degrade.
